Winter travel in Mongolia offers unique and exhilarating experiences.
Adventure travel in Mongolia doesn't need to end when the temperatures fall way below zero. Winter experiences in Mongolia range from visiting a family at their ger for Tsaagaan Sar (Lunar New Year) to attending the ice festival on the frozen Lake Hovsgol. Active adventures can include dog sledding, backcountry cross country ski expeditions and horse sledding on frozen lakes
In March 2015 I embarked on a three week ski expedition in Northern Mongolia. This was a cross-country ski expedition, on nordic backcountry skis, in the Hovgsol region of Northern Mongolia, bordering Siberia. The expedition served as a huge learning curve for winter travel in the Mongolian taiga. Here are a few of the lessons I learned.
